| Case Studies of Those Supported - What Our Applicants Have Said As stated previously, CIT doesn't always provide funding for organisations - it sometimes provides advice and a steer to people and organisation's seeking the way ahead with their idea. The following offer some insight into the support we've offered over the years: Advantage Africa www.advantageafrica.org 'My wife, Jane and I had worked in development in a range of countries for more than 20 years. We set up Advantage Africa to work with the many inspirational people we met who were working within their own communities to improve the circumstances for many - especially those who are doubly disadvantaged by being disabled and/or being HIV positive or having AIDS. When we were first starting our organisation, Jane and I approached CIT for £x funding and management advice to develop our branding and advertising materials so as to communicate both our work and help us fundraise to do more work. The grant helped us - but we'd say that the advice was just as helpful. 'Michael Robson, Chair of CIT said 'we were impressed that Advantage Africa's founders were clearly trying something different to address issues of poverty WITH people who themselves identified what was important and how to address it. We valued their ideas and the clarity of what it was they were setting out to achieve. This bottom-up approach to development seemed both interesting and had more chance of succeeding' SVN (Senior Volunteer Network) www.svnet.org 'In 1998 we approached CIT for a grant to help us link older, retired Christian Teachers with volunteering opportunities to share their skills with educators across the world. Speaking with the CIT Director helped us shape our ideas and - though CIT declined to financially support us -- the advice we were given has really helped our organisation develop, seek and achieve other support. It showed us that getting support for our organisation was not just about money. 8 years later, SVN is thriving and expanding its educational work across the developing world. We have sent individuals and teams to over 40 different projects in 30 different countries, making available training and consultancy that the recipient communities could never have afforded'. John Hallett. hristian Escapologist www.breakout.org.uk 'CIT supported my 18 years of evangelism with a grant for £x which enabled me to take the Christian word and faith into a range of Primary and Secondary schools through the fun and dynamic medium of escapology and development of gospel booklets! This reached hundreds and even thousands of young people' said Steve Legge. ''this was a very unusual approach to sharing and promoting the Christian faith. It offered the chance to approach this important message by taking down barriers and building interest around something that was very entertaining. Reaching out to young people of faith, other faiths and no faiths is important to our Trustees and we thought Steve's work worth supporting.'
