'My wife, Jane and I had worked in development in a range of countries for more than 20 years. We set up Advantage Africa to work with the many inspirational people we met who were working within their own communities to improve the circumstances for many - especially those who are doubly disadvantaged by being disabled and/or being HIV positive or having AIDS. When we were first starting our organisation, Jane and I approached CIT for £x funding and management advice to develop our branding and advertising materials so as to communicate both our work and help us fundraise to do more work. The grant helped us - but we'd say that the advice was just as helpful.

Michael Robson, Chair of CIT said
'we were impressed that Advantage Africa's founders were clearly trying something different to address issues of poverty WITH people who themselves identified what was important and how to address it. We valued their ideas and the clarity of what it was they were setting out to achieve. This bottom-up approach to development seemed both interesting and had more chance of succeeding'
